The day that greeted Holo was more than a little dreary as she poked her head out of the den. The sky was a sulky gray, and the clouds’ heavy bellies were full to bursting; the light drizzle that they were releasing cast a gloomy haze over everything and reduced visibility quite a bit. Even Holo’s normally bright golden vapor seemed drab in the watery light, and it seemed to dissipate faster as the rain misted through the air.

Ducking back into the warm, dry den, Holo padded back to where Cass and Byrd were still contentedly dozing, blissfully unaware of the dim day outside. She had to flick her ears in amusement at the sleeping pair, sprawled in a rather ungainly way across each of their moss-lined nests that they had constructed. She couldn’t quite bring herself to wake them from their peaceful slumber, so she decided to go on a quick jaunt to the stream. All the sound of the rain had her feeling parched.

Returning once more to the entrance of the den, she paused in attempt to taste the air. It was no use, though, for the misting rain was just enough to tamp down any subtle scents, and she couldn’t really pick up anything aside from the wet smell of the greenery around her. Shrugging to herself, she pinned her ears back to avoid getting water in them and stepped out into the drizzle.

The rain quickly beaded on her skin and then streaked off, making her shiver a bit as it painted cold trails down her back. It wasn’t necessarily unpleasant though, and she actually found herself enjoying the damp air as she brushed beneath branches and leaves bent low with beads of fresh water. She snagged up a few newly-ripened berries as she passed by several loaded bushes, savoring the way that they were cooled by the air around them.

Upon arriving at the stream, she was a bit surprised to see it lapping slightly higher on its banks than it normally did, but it didn’t seem like there was really a risk of her being tripped up by the mildly stronger current, so she waded in until the ripples parted around the middles of her legs. When she dipped her head to take one long pull of a drink, she found herself reminiscing on the same practice that she’d had back at the foghouse. She and a few other fumis would occasionally go to play in the stream that cut through a portion of the foghouse grounds, and she would always make sure to take a long drink from that fresh, cold water. It tasted so much better than the stale water from the taps that the humans gave them, and it had given her encouragement in her musings of escape.

Lifting her head and breaking the spell of her memory trail, Holo felt refreshed. Even though the day had seemed dreary at first, she found that she was enjoying the pleasantly cool air, and the sound of raindrops on the leaves all around sent her into a state of deep relaxation. She let out a long, contented sigh, then waded back out of the stream, setting off towards the den again.

Upon her return, she found that the other two had woken up in her absence, and Cass was waiting in the dry mouth of the den for her.

Hi! She puffed as Holo drew close, Byrd went hunting. I wanted to wait for you!

Holo gently touched her nose to the gummi’s head. Well, thank you. I see that you didn’t want to play in the rain, though. She snorted to underline her teasing. Cass let out a peep of amusement, batting at the nurse playfully. She was making a move to charge out into the rain between Holo’s legs when she suddenly froze, her eyes going wide in fear. Holo felt an icy wave of dread creep through her veins, and she turned to follow Cass’ terrified gaze.

There in the clearing before their den was a hulking scarlet mass, snarling and dripping white ooze.

Holo couldn’t believe her eyes at first, and she crouched down in an instinctive pose of submission. How could this wretched creature have found her again? She had run miles and miles from where she had first encountered it, and it was blind! Was it tracking her? It couldn’t just be simple chance that it would end up in this exact place.

She couldn’t understand why she hadn’t sensed it before, until it registered for her that the wet air was the perfect scent-masking mechanism. Had it planned this? The simple thought of such a monstrosity intelligently pursuing her sent horrified chills down her spine.

The red beast seemed aware of the two fumis’ terror, and turned its head to face them as if it could see them directly. The snarling and drooling increased, and it approached, brandishing its one forward-facing horn menacingly. Holo was mute with fear. There was nowhere to run; they were cornered inside the den, and the awful creature was too close now for them to slip past its claws unscathed.

Cass suddenly began to let out eerie wails, cries for help much like the ones that she had made when Holo first found her. The crimson beast took pause, seemingly confused for a moment, and cocked its head in an uncomfortably benign movement. It just seemed too innocent of a gesture for such a grotesque monster to be making it. Holo’s heart pounded as she moved to grab Cass with her tail and make a break for it while the creature was still, but then it reared up on its hind legs, face distorted in a horrific expression. Holo cowered before it, unable to move as she realized that this was really going to be it. This was the end of the road for her, and it would likely be for Cass too. She felt incredibly fearful, and also incredibly guilty. She hadn’t paid close enough attention, and now there was no escape. She squeezed her eyes shut and pressed herself close to Cass as she waited for the impact.
