Nathus breathed a bright red cloud of relief, shutting his eyes momentarily as he stretched his legs. He had jolted awake from a nightmare, fearing the snap of teeth in his flesh as he relived yet another fight that he’d experienced not so long ago. These dreams were almost nightly occurrences, and he desperately wished they would go away, but he was grateful at least that they were really only dreams. He would much rather have that than spend another day being pitted against other brutes in violent battles for the entertainment of cruel humans.

It was still nighttime, but the sky was brightening ever so slightly in the east. Nathus dug his claws into the damp earth as he arched his back in a stretch as well. Dawn wasn’t far off, so he didn’t think it would be worth it to try and go back to sleep; he might as well get up for the day now. His makeshift den of branches leaned against a large fallen log rustled as he slid out from under it. He had been living out here for a few weeks now, and the leaves on those branches were decidedly shrunken and dry, not doing as good of a job at keeping out the winds at night. It was probably time to either replace them or move on from this place.

He sighed as thoughts about the past few weeks ran through his mind. It seemed almost unreal that he was finally out of the hellhole of the fighting pits. Even though these woods were a bit empty and though he definitely felt lonely, it was unbelievable amounts better than the tiny cage that he’d lived in before, surrounded by the hostile snarls of brutes whose empathy had been worn away by years of grappling with others in the ring. He could still vividly envision the particularly foul scent of some of them, and the way that their vapor seemed heavier than normal, sinking in the air rather than floating and dissipating. He’d heard others muttering about how they would eat from the carcasses of their victims if they managed to take their lives, and from the violent, manic look that he’d seen in those fumis’ eyes, he had decided that he believed those rumors.

His escape had not been planned. The day had seen the usual routine of greasy, smelly humans poking their fingers through the mesh of the cage before the first fights had begun, their cackling and obnoxious banter causing him to bare his fangs in a halfhearted warning. He never allowed himself to get as riled up as his neighbors, who slammed viciously against the metal of their cages and spewed noxious vapor in hatred of everything that they set their eyes on. He still held hope that one day he would be rescued from this awful place.

As the day progressed in the normal fashion, he let himself be swept along in the sickly current. When his keeper came to release him from his cage for his match, however, there was a sudden noise that rose above the usual din of the grappling fumis. It was a high-pitched wailing, accompanied by a strange flash of red and blue light, and the humans seemed terrified. They scrambled, and Nathus found himself standing unattended, with the door of his tiny cage left open. He blinked in disbelief, then leaped out on instinct, heart racing. He spotted an opening in the side of the dingy warehouse and bolted for it, dodging the other fumis that had already been out. It was madness, a whirlwind of teeth, claws, foul vapor, and smelly humans. Still, in what seemed only a split second, Nathus had scrambled out of the hole and was tearing through the thick bushes that surrounded that terrible place.

He didn’t know how long he ran for, nor what direction he was even heading in. He simply wanted to get as far away as possible, as quickly as possible. Exhaustion finally stopped him in his tracks, and he realized that he was ravenous as he sunk heavily to the ground. He didn’t have the energy to search for food though, and he quickly slipped into a deep sleep.

The days had passed in a haze after he’d woken up. He had managed to do some hunting, and had found some scant sources of berries and tree nuts to supplement those meals. It tasted heavenly compared to the slop he’d been fed at the ring. His stomach was filled time and time again for what felt like the first time in eternity, and he practically wept with gratitude for whatever higher powers had released him from that prison.

Those days had led to this point in a blur, and now he was feeling a bit more connected to reality. He was aware that the food in this area really would not last long, and he was quickly depleting the limited resources in the sparse stand of trees that he’d taken up residence in.

He tasted the early morning air, searching for any kind of hint as to what direction he should migrate in. The growing light on the horizon beckoned him, and he made his way to the top of a nearby hill to have a better vantage point. He hadn’t come out this way before, and as he crested the hill, he was amazed to see a grand swath of green laid out in the valley in front of him. The breeze coming from down below smelled fresh and green, and full of new scents that he didn’t recognize as well as those of some now-familiar prey. It almost seemed too easy, too perfect. He thanked whatever eyes were watching over him once again, and set off down the hill without looking back. He could tell, almost as if by some intuition, that his future lay down in that valley, and he wasn’t going to let the past hinder him any longer.

I'm so proud of how this turned out :'D I'm happy to introduce Nathus officially! Can't wait for him to come across other fumis... ;P
